Yes, I think it’s good to be weird, but this guy is really out there. You know, before it was cool, because I’m a hipster and I have no friends, but that’s a story for another time. I guess I kind of just described myself, but I’ve been a fan for years now. Artsy Tumblr teens with cuffed jeans, vintage windbreakers, dirty Vans, and ironic thrift-store hats. His newer fans have become a meme in a sense. Since his last project, the 2015 mini-album Another One, or his last full length, 2014’s Salad Days, Mac Demarco has seen his popularity increase immensely. I was hoping for more from his new album, more groovy bass solos and songs dedicated to his favourite brand of cigarettes, not just lyrics about how his heart has been broken.For the next installment of the Cloud City Sound Music Reviews, I will be reviewing Mac Demarco’s new album This Old Dog. Although I do enjoy this song, it’s one of those you wouldn’t skip if it came on shuffle but you also wouldn’t purposefully put it on. Mac’s combines his raspy voice in two different tones creating a harmony with himself which is very typical due to him recording all of his own songs. There is no build up to anything, the song stays fairly constant and at one pace with no real change in vocal tone with exception to the chorus. The song is very piano heavy with a gloomy chord progression and Demarco’s classic multi-tune instrumental in force. With the little pops of 80’s synth influence throughout and an inoffensive, mellow bass line the song is surprisingly catchy for such a miserable melody.Īs the song begins, I am reminded of what I have heard in certain elevators or when I’ve been put on hold by the bank.
It sounds like he has collated all his sad songs and ever so carefully combined them together to make One More Love Song. The pace is slow, very calming and easily described as easy listening. The melody and vocal performance are tremendously similar to a lot of his previous music. The lyrics of One More Love Song are slightly depressing, a real tear jerker and wonderful to listen to if you’re not feeling great. Upbeat, happy songs containing jazz influences that make it difficult not to bob about in your seat.ĭemarco’s new album, This Old Dog, seems to be following more of a sombre root. My favourite album of his was undeniably 2 featuring beauties such as Annie and Freaking Out the Neighborhood.
